Audition Selection

You may audition on Electric Bass (Bass Guitar) but you will be expected to learn acoustic string bass, taking applied lessons on Double Bass. You will continue to have opportunities to play Electric Bass in Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos.
While there are many opportunities to play and study drum set for our music majors, students are expected to study the fundamentals of snare drum, including the rudiments, and reading music. All our degrees are designed with a classically trained foundation. Auditioning students are also expected to have some music theory experience or have read snare drum music. During the audition students will be expected to perform a written snare drum solo (preferably 2 in contrasting styles) in addition to any drum set demonstrations and styles. You must select 'Percussion - Snare Drum' when asked what is your primary instrument for this audition. There is an expectation that you have a good understanding of music and can play an instrument or sing. On the audition day, for your composition interview please bring with you a repertoire list and two representative scores. Your audition will be on your primary voice or instrument which is listed in one of the auditioning groups in the next question.

Since the Music Technology degree is part of the Bachelor of Music program, it is expected that each student attain a level of musicianship equivalent to those students in the Music Education and Music Composition programs. An audition for our Music Technology program means you need to audition in one of the auditioning groups listed in the next question.

All percussion auditions: two prepared and contrasting snare drum solos or etudes (preferably one in simple and one in compound time); basic rudiments; snare drum sight-readingTimpani and mallet pieces are required for a B.M. Performance audition (optional for other degree auditions). Tuning and scales may be asked of those playing timpani and mallets. Students with a drum set background may be asked to display styles (swing, bossa, samba, etc.)
For Music Education or Bachelor of Arts programs: perform two contrasting pieces, at least one from the Baroque or Classical period, preferably from memory. For B.M. Performance program: same requirements as above, plus one additional piece that contrasts with the other two selections and periods. Sight reading.
Perform from memory two classical songs of contrasting styles. Sight singing. Vocalizing on scales and arpeggios. Interview with voice faculty. An accompanist will be provided for voice auditions. Please bind all photocopies of your music or bring the original copies
